Why does the window protrude inward after installation?

My partner and I bought a house where we are currently having the windows replaced from 1980. After the first windows were put in, I was shocked to see that the window protruded inward. The window installer just said that since it is a prefab house and this is absolutely normal, a drywaller would have to come in.

My question now is whether this is normal, or the window builder ordered too deep windows. Unfortunately, I do not find similar questions on the Internet, where I then either assume that it is normal or so absurd that no one had such a case.
