Is the smell of solvent in the bathroom normal?
On days when it is very, very windy, in the kitchen and bathroom that are outside, we go in and notice the smell of solvent...I assume a strong wind is carrying something away and it is going up the ductwork...but why the smell of solvent? We have a diesel tank downstairs in the garage in a small room.... I don't know if the smell is caused by some component of diesel that smells like that? It's a detached house and it just so happens to be very windy these days.
Answer
Good morning. Yes, it is possible. You can verify that the solvent smell you noticed is similar to the smell you have in the diesel room.
Hydrocarbons, such as diesel fuel, give off some compounds that are lighter than air, and that's what you're probably smelling.
Although usually on windy days the gutters get in the way and odors can pass through the chambers, it's not a strong smell.
