Can someone explain to me why the same roof is divided into two parts with a catchment in the middle?
Is it due to improved structural performance? What is the benefit of this? Or is it just such a technique in general?

a photo would be necessary, so we could get a better idea of how it is and why.

There may be several reasons. One for aesthetics, another to avoid exceeding the maximum height of the highest point of the roof, which may be limited by urban planning regulations. Also for construction cost, depending on the structural system being used.
