What are the disadvantages of quarry slabs of mottled shale?

We are completely in love with colored slate. Either as regular tiles or as "quarry slabs".

I have attached pictures of what I mean. Maybe someone has already installed it and can tell us about their experience.

Slate is a very soft material. Scratches will appear very quickly and will be difficult or impossible to remove. If you get dirt (like small rocks) inside and then drag it across the floor... etc.

  • I don't think it's bad for the floor, either, if you ever get a scratch there. It's not a smooth floor. It has texture and color, so scratches are not very noticeable. Even if the edge breaks off, it's not a big deal. It's just nature, and it's not flat and smooth anyway. But thanks for the tip :)
