Can I sand veneered door frames / casings?

I have door frames which are made of veneered pressed cardboard and are unfortunately already a bit shabby. Can such veneer be thoroughly sanded with, say, 180 grit sandpaper and an orbital sander? There are a total of six frames, so I can't sand them all by hand.

You can do it. With caution, 300-600.
